2018 Country Carnival
The Annual Table Tennis Country Championships was held recently in Murray Bridge. Four players represented Port Lincoln being Sally Kunze, Ellen Challinger, Serena Fong and Nathan Fong. Sixty-nine players from around the State participated over the two days.
Port Lincoln fielded a Women’s team for the first time in many years. The team of Serena Fong, Sally Kunze and Ellen Challinger made the final but were defeated by Murray Bridge. Serena Fong won eight of nine matches, Sally Kunze won seven of nine matches and Ellen Challinger won four of nine matches throughout the event. The team events determine individual player rankings with Serena Fong ranked third and Sally Kunze ranked fourth of the women. Nathan Fong played with the Barossa & Light team, which didn’t receive a placing. He still played well individually though, winning four of his twelve matches despite only being 11 years old.
One of the highlights of the weekend was Nathan Fong defeating highly experienced Kevin Pierce from Great Southern, in a tight five set singles match to advance to the quarter finals of the Men’s A Open Singles.
Nathan’s Fong’s results were: winner of under 13 singles, winner of under 15 doubles (with Serena Fong), runner-up of under 15 singles, runner-up of under 18 doubles.
Sally Kunze’s results were: winner of over 50 women’s singles, winner of over 60 women’s singles, runner-up of over 40 women’s singles, runner-up of over 40 women’s doubles (with Ellen Challinger), runner-up in the women’s A singles, winner of the women’s A doubles (with Serena Fong).
Ellen Challinger’s results were: runner-up of over 40 women’s doubles (with Sally Kunze).
Serena Fong’s results were: winner of under 15 doubles (with Nathan Fong), winner of the women’s A doubles (with Nathan Fong)
The 2019 Country Carnival will again be held in Murray Bridge on Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th July.
